Mesa Mayor John Giles, the prominent attorney and community leader whom voters picked to replace Scott Smith last year, will pursue a full four-year term in 2016.
Giles, 55, is expected to announce his re-election bid on Wednesday via social media and e-mails to supporters. He will be the first declared candidate in the race.
“I’ve really enjoyed being the mayor. I wasn’t anticipating doing this a year or two ago, but … I realized I can’t imagine there’s anything I’d rather do,” the Mesa native told The Arizona Republic. “The last 14 months have been really educational, and I’m looking forward to being even more productive going forward and hopefully accomplishing things more quickly.”
