A citizens committee will be appointed by Peoria leaders to recommend a plan for setting aside open space that would be off-limits to future development.
The panel will spend several months studying potential strategies before filing a report with the mayor and City Council.
The governing body voted 7-0 Tuesday night to create the group and call for applications from the public to serve on the panel, known as the
Ad Hoc Citizens Review Committee.
Mayor Cathy Carlat said that six years after the Great Recession, expansion has returned to Peoria at a rapid clip, leaving the city at a pivotal time in its opportunity to plan for development that could potentially alter the landscape forever.
