Property-tax breaks for developers shift burden to other taxpayers

Property-tax abatements awarded to developers in Franklin County shifted more than $300 million in tax burden to the rest of taxpayers over the past five years, a study by county Auditor Clarence Mingo shows.

“That’s an astonishing number over five years,” Mingo said.

The amount is equal to about $250 in additional tax for each of the 1.2 million men, women and children in the county over that time.
