Longtime Councilman Powell won’t run for mayor

Councilman Dick Powell put to rest speculation he might run for mayor this year at Tuesday’s City Council meeting.

Powell said he considered running for the position but ultimately decided he preferred being a councilman. Never thinking of himself as much of a politician, he said he liked how his current position serves the community.

“I think that we’re so blessed, we are community representatives,” he said. “We see our constituency at the post office and grocery store.”

The ceremonial ribbon-cuttings and public events a mayor is expected to attend would pose a potential time constraint, Powell said, since he still operates his family business, Powell Feed & Supply.
