Plans for a $30 million downtown Mesa library designed to honor the late Sen. Barry Goldwater, R-Ariz., have fallen through after the foundation behind the development lost its leader and failed to meet an extended fundraising deadline.

Mesa had given the Barry and Peggy Goldwater Center for Democracy until Dec. 31 to finance and begin construction on a city-owned site at the southeastern corner of First Avenue and Macdonald.

The 40,000-square-foot Barry and Peggy Goldwater Library and Archives was to contain both the Goldwater archives and artifacts, as well as papers from other prominent Arizona politicians.
