A little-known agency that distributes Arizona’s share of the electricity produced by Hoover Dam is suddenly the subject of intense scrutiny at the state Legislature.

The Arizona Power Authority, created soon after the landmark Depression Era project was completed, is on the verge of finalizing 50-year contracts for that electricity to benefit farmland and cities.

The power comes at a lower cost than other energy providers charge, making it a lucrative and sought-after resource.
