Nine candidates spoke this afternoon, vying for the vacant Phoenix City Council District 3 opening that serves over 180,000 residents in north Phoenix. Former District 3 Councilman Bill Gates resigned May 31 to run for the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors. A special election to permanently fill the seat will happen on November 8.
Each candidate gave a variety of reasons why they should be chosen, all centering around meeting the needs of the District 3 residents and business, addressing issues such as economic development, workforce training, education, crime and homelessness among others. All of the candidates showed a record of service that made them strong choices for the position, but for some they would be new to the inner workings of the city.
In the end, Thelda Williams district 1 councilwoman nominated Debra Stark, former planning and development director for Maricopa County, stating that Stark has the “advantage of inside knowledge of how the city works.” Councilwoman Williams spoke of the time it takes to become familiar with the inner workings of city government and Stark’s proven competency.
After the vote roll call, the count was 6 to 1 in favor of now Councilwoman Debra Stark. And just like that it was over, Mayor Stanton thanked those assembled before exiting with the new councilwoman to swear her quickly into office.
Update: Councilman Jim Waring was the dissenting vote, stating during the proceedings that he felt the selection process should include voters.
