When I saw “Fwd: Jerry Emmett” as the subject line of an email this morning, I braced myself for news of something bad that may have happened to my former grade-school teacher.
See, Mrs. Emmett — as I respectfully referred to her back 8th grade — is now 102-years-old. So I couldn’t help but wonder: Did she fall and hurt herself? Is she sick… or worse?
Not even close.
I opened the email only to discover a clip showing her looking like she’s having the time of her life! — as an Arizona delegate to the Democratic National Convention, where she proudly shouted to the rafters the state’s 51 votes for Hillary Clinton.
(And now that I think about it,“Fwd: Jerry Emmett” is the perfect descriptor for my former home-room teacher, because she’s definitely the kind of lady who keeps on moving forward!)
So I just want to say: Congratulations, Mrs. Emmett! — and thank you for making civics so fascinating way back when at Lafayette grade school — and for continuing to do so, all these years later.
