The water Arizona is saving to lessen the blow of future Colorado River shortfalls won’t end up flowing to California or anyone else, federal officials have assured Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Arizona.
Arizona agreed to keep some of its allocated water in Lake Mead instead of sending it to central Arizona farmers or storing it in underground aquifers. The goal was to prop up the reservoir through the continued drought, but under previous agreements and court rulings, California theoretically could have claimed any unused water.
