27,000 apply for Phoenix rental assistance as city settles discrimination complaint

About 27,000 people applied for a place on Phoenix’s Section 8 wait list this month — nearly triple the spots the city has available for housing assistance, according to its Housing Department.

The roughly two-week period let low-income people apply for vouchers that help them pay rent; the city will now choose 10,000 people for the list using a lottery system.
