Change will help inland port, appease Coolidge landowners

Project would boost city’s economic development effort

The city has pinned plenty of hope for its economic development on the potential creation of an inland port in the southern part of its city limits and now is pushing for a planning change that would accommodate landowners’ wishes.

Such a port would be an extension, legally, of West Coast docks to allow processing of goods through a rail connection from California.

The city has released for public review a major amendment to the general plan passed by voters in 2014 that would slightly alter the city’s route preference for a north-south freeway that, if built, would connect the East Valley with Interstate 10 near Picacho. The new preference is intended to reflect the wishes of Pinal Land Holdings, the development company with significant ownership in southern Coolidge along State Route 87 and a branch of the Union Pacific Railroad.
