Scottsdale’s proposed Desert Discovery Center — a controversial, multimillion-dollar attraction that has grown even more contentious as November’s city election approaches — will not require a vote by the public for approval, City Council members decided Monday evening.
During a raucous two-hour meeting at Scottsdale City Hall, hundreds of residents pressed elected officials to place a City Charter amendment on the November ballot that, if passed, would require any development beyond trails and trailheads within the McDowell Sonoran Preserve receive approval of voters.
More than 450 people signed a petition supporting the charter amendment, which would delay construction of the Desert Discovery Center, planned near the preserve’s Gateway Trailhead, until voters weigh in.
