A major biotechnology campus could emerge near the west end of Tempe Town Lake, but the city first will have to overcome several hurdles, including needed cleanup at the site, which is contaminated with buried construction debris accumulated over time, officials say.
The proposal calls for a five-building campus with two parking garages that would be built on about 18 acres of city-owned land immediately west of the Tempe Center for the Arts, according to a city report. About 5 acres of that site already is developed as a parking lot adjacent to the arts center.
