AARP Statement on PURA Decision Regarding UI Request for Rate Increase

AARP Connecticut State Advocacy Director John Erlingheuser provided the following statement in regards to the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) decision on an electric distribution rate increase request by United Illuminating:

“We are grateful that PURA took into account the public’s concern in its decision to grant UI an electric distribution increase that is nearly $40 million under what they requested,” said Erlingheuser. “However, permitting any increase adds to the financial strain and burden of Connecticut residents – which already pay some of the highest rates for electricity in the country – especially seniors and those living on fixed or low-incomes.”

In their decision, PURA reduced the monthly service charge – a fixed charge that most residential customers pay regardless of amount of electricity they use – from $17.25 to $9.64.

“We are encouraged PURA agreed with AARP and other consumer advocate groups that the monthly fixed charge disproportionately impacts low-use customers, such as seniors and low-income households,” said Erlingheuser. “We pledge to continue to be an advocate for consumer protection rights, and fair and reasonable electric rates, for all Connecticut residents.”

Residents should continue to voice their concerns about unfair and unreasonable rate requests by contacting the state’s Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA).

AARP encourages all consumers to challenge utility rate increase proposals in order to ensure utility companies receive only what is fair and reasonable – so they can keep more of the money they’ve earned.
