The Surprise Planning and Zoning Commission approved the conversion of a 8.08-acre parcel at Desert Oasis from commercial to medium density residential.
This land is on the northwest corner of Jomax Road and 171st Avenue and is directly south of Desert Oasis Elementary School. The Asante planning area is on the south side of Jomax.
Several commissioners praised the change. They agreed with applicant Kent Xander, on behalf of 171st Avenue Northwest LLC, that commercial development is more likely at 163rd and Jomax and that a residential buffer between a school and a commercial area is preferable.
