24,375 new home sales last year at Top 50 Masterplans; 8% increase over 2015. “Low mortgage rates, steady job growth, improved income growth, and low resale and new home inventory levels all contributed to strong new home demand in 2016,” according to John Burns Real Estate Consulting’s annual report of the “Top 50 Master-Planned Communities.” See which “Phoenix masterplans make this year’s ranking,” and access the full report here: http://bit.ly/2iwg62p

[OPINION] D-Backs sue for right to flee Chase Field (and likely us). Clearly not a fan of the suit nor the team’s contention that the county “is not spending enough [on Chase Field] to keep the place up,“ the Republic’s Laurie Roberts blasts the D-backs, winding up and delivering the editorial equivalent of a 101 m.p.h. brushback aimed at team heads. Dismissing Ken Kendrick’s remarks with “Boohoo,” Roberts goes on to note that “the team is demanding $187 million in upgrades and repairs… lest its players be forced to endure something less than state of the art. Sort of like baseball fans did in 2016, most every time the D-Backs took the field.” Somebody better call the trainer, cuz that’s gotta hurt. http://bit.ly/2iVbILt

Surprise planners approve Magnolia, associated development. (If you initially thought this YourWestValley headline was referring to the actions of some sort of project-approving flash mob, you’re not alone.) “The Magnolia plat includes 812 lots with 340 standard housing lots… 224 lots served by alleys and 248 cluster lots…. A 10-acre [‘as yet named’] slice of property around 175th and Sweetwater… is surrounded by the larger Magnolia development. Big ADOT projects for S. Arizona in 2017, including around Casa Grande, Eloy. “An interchange [replacement] at Ajo Way (State Route 86) and Interstate 19 in Tucson…. Zone change for Lucid land given initial approval. “[Casa Grande Planning and Zoning Commission] approved the… request to rezone [’80 acres located on the northwest corner of Thornton… and Selma Highway’] from Urban Ranch to General Industrial…. Lawmakers looking at ways to block voter enacted laws. “A series of measures being proposed [by state legislators] would change everything from signature threshold to imposing new requirements on the ability to use paid circulators. Ducey to Congress: Don’t rush Obamacare’s repeal. In yet another report from Capitol Media Services’ Howard Fischer, Gov. Ducey explains: “I don’t want to see any Arizonan have the rug pulled out from underneath them in terms of changing this law…”  (And probably not a wise move anyhow, pulling a rug out from underneath someone who no longer has health insurance.)  Further details on Gov.
