Valeria Molina started the new year with a few weeks of experience in a new job. It’s not an easy one.
As mayor of Guadalupe, the 38-year-old must now move past the scandals of a predecessor, tackle economic stagnation and mend some long-simmering divisions that strike at the core of the town’s identity.
The town — a square mile of land sandwiched between Phoenix and Tempe with a population of about 6,000 — is a blend of cultures, Molina said. It combines Mexican and Pascua Yaqui tribal heritages in the heart of Arizona.
