A conference room full of Town Council members and town staff were asked what they imagine local high school seniors hear most often about their future.
“The prisons” and “get out” were two quick replies.
Karalea Cox, the town’s facilitator as it develops a strategic plan, agreed the message often amounts to, “Get an education, there’s nothing for you here.” What they actually hear, is “You don’t want me.”
Cox suggested a better message is, “We want you, and we want to create opportunities for you to stay.”
