Local officials in Arizona are worried that proposed spending cuts would devastate a variety of programs and projects
President Donald Trump’s budget outline, with its proposed cuts to many agencies and programs, could pinch Arizona on everything from jailing undocumented immigrants to funding light-rail construction and transit projects to block grants that cities and towns use to help low-income families, seniors and people with disabilities.
Titled “America First,” the Trump blueprint released last week calls for deep cuts in domestic discretionary spending to offset increases in defense and homeland-security spending.
If the White House’s budget priorities are enacted, it could mean increased investment in the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program at Luke Air Force Base as well as appropriations for Trump’s controversial border wall, which could affect southern Arizona, depending on how far the project gets in the next year.
