What size house in the Valley will $300K buy? “[A] new report from personal finance site GOBankingRates… looked at median property listing prices on Zillow to calculate how much home you can buy for $300,000 in every U.S. state… In Ohio, for instance, that amount will buy you well over 3,000 square feet, but in Hawaii, it will only [cause sellers and realtors to giggle and mock].” Not really. How a big tower in another city set the table for a high-rise development on one of the Valley’s most coveted empty lots. “Developers have eyed the property at Myrtle… University… and Seventh… for a number of years.” Now, PBJ reports that Opus Group is constructing two “upscale” apartment towers (20 and 12 stories high) on the 3.22 acre property. A NEW EGG PLANT – Almark to build new facility in Yuma. “Food manufacturer Almark Foods is planning to build a 120,000-square-foot, $27.5 million facility on 17 acres in Yuma, slated to open next year.” According to Almark’s official website, the company is “dedicated to providing the highest quality egg products” — just a little FYI from us to you in the unlikely event that our ALL-CAP headline and this Arizona Business Daily article’s “deviled” photo don’t provide enough of a clue as to what type of food manufacturing Almark is involved in. http://bit.ly/2pCF7kl

Housing affordability ticked up in first quarter. “60.3 percent of new and existing homes that sold nationwide between the beginning of January and end of March were affordable to families earning… $68,000. Tucson Electric Power proposes higher charges, fewer credits for future solar customers; ‘Aggressively anti-consumer,’ says Court Rich, Rose Law Group senior partner and director of Renewable Energy Department. “Tucson Electric Power Co. has proposed a new rate structure for future customers with rooftop solar that would cut credits for excess solar production and mandate time-of-use rates with new monthly charges.” — Arizona Daily Star. Pinal economic director needs kidney transplant. “Economic Development Manager Tim Kanavel was honored by his peers this month, [becoming] the first-ever two-time recipient of the Economic Development Distinguished by Excellence Award for Economic Developer of the Year, Small Community.” But as Pinal Central points out, Tim’s “biggest accomplishment may be that he did his job well while also waiting for a kidney transplant.” Tim Kanavel explains: “I had a double transplant in 2009 of the kidney and pancreas… The transplanted kidney has failed and I am on the list awaiting a new one.” We send out our well-wishes to Tim. http://bit.ly/2rjblhv

U.S. Supreme Court urged to uphold Arizona’s drivers license policy. Fourteen states have filed an “amicus brief… to overturn the 9th Circuit’s rulings on DACA [and] uphold Arizona’s right to deny driver’s licenses to undocumented illegal aliens.” Arkansas Attorney General Leslie Rutledge: “[T]he 9th Circuit, in its effort to legislate what it wants Congress to do, is forcing the State of Arizona to issue driver’s licenses to unlawful aliens.” Arizona Daily Independent. http://bit.ly/2r9oL2m
