Data from the Census Bureau’s Quarterly Starts and Completions by Purpose and Design and NAHB analysis shows that the over the last four quarters the number of single-family homes built-for-rent decreased to 28,000 from 35,000 the previous four quarters. In Eye on Housing, NAHB Chief Economist Robert Dietz reports that the market share for these type of homes during Q2 2017 was 3.5% of total starts, which is still higher than the historical average of 2.8%.
Dietz highlights the fact that that this market represents only a small portion of the home building market as a whole:
