The South Mountain Freeway is getting closer to completion as part of the Loop 202 and Loop 101 freeway system.
Drivers using Interstate 10 in west Phoenix now can see the first girders that were placed about six stories above the freeway at 59th Avenue, according to a press release from the Arizona Department of Transportation.
These massive steel beams are nearly 150,000 pounds and make up the foundation of the 1,565-foot-long bridge that will connect the new South Mountain Freeway to I-10.
The bridge will serve as the longest flyover ramp out of the five bridges that will connect the two freeways, ADOT said.
