Rep. Mark Cardenas, D-Phoenix, filed to run for state treasurer Monday.
The three-term legislator told Arizona Capitol Times that after six years in the House, he felt he was ready to handle the state’s finances.
Cardenas said the “lack of forward thinking” at the Capitol when it comes to addressing the state’s budget, and an increased interest in addressing what he called unnecessary tax breaks from Democrats and Republicans pushed him to run for higher office.
Attorney Mark Manoil, a former Maricopa County Democratic Party chairman, filed to run for treasurer in November. Sen. Kimberly Yee, R-Phoenix and Corporation Commissioner Tom Forese, a Republican, have also filed to run for treasurer.
