Why a vacant Monti’s La Casa Vieja worries Tempe leaders

The once iconic Monti’s La Casa Vieja stands vacant, and some worry in disrepair, as plans to build a hotel and office building on the downtown Tempe site have stalled.

The restaurant, which was supposed to be preserved as part of development, closed in 2014.

Three years later, a shed fire near the building prompted city scrutiny and concerns about a lack of security and fire-safety measures at the landmark.
