Being mayor may be an impressive job title, but the pay won’t make you rich.
For many cities in metro Phoenix, the top elected spot is a second job.
In Peoria, for instance, Mayor Cathy Carlat earns less than $33,000 to lead the growing northwest Valley suburb.
In Mesa, which tops Atlanta in population, Mayor John Giles earns $73,000 and works part-time as an attorney.
This month in the Valley’s fourth largest municipality, Gilbert politicians rolled back town council members’ pay to 2008 figures after putting a stop to automatic cost-of-living increases implemented a decade ago. The general consensus was that public service should cover expenses but not be a money-maker.
