Maybe homes in San Francisco aren’t priced out of reach after all.
A new measure of housing affordability introduced by the Urban Land Institute (ULI) indicates that homeownership in cities traditionally considered among the most unaffordable—including San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington, D.C.—is more within reach for local renters than some other metrics have shown. Unlike indexes that focus on median incomes and median home prices as indicators of a market’s housing affordability, the ULI’s new housing affordability for renters index (HARI) takes into account the distribution of incomes and home prices in a given MSA.
