Sen. John McCain urged his Senate colleagues Wednesday to reject Gina Haspel’s nomination to head the CIA after she refused to address the morality of torture in her confirmation hearing.
Haspel, a 33-year veteran of the Central Intelligence Agency who oversaw a detention facility for suspected terrorists in Thailand in 2002, told senators she “will not restart” the enhanced interrogation program, but would not address the morality of its methods — which many view as torture in the post-Sept. 11 era.
“I’m not going to sit here, with the benefit of hindsight, and judge the very good people who made hard decisions, who were running the agency in very extraordinary circumstances,” Haspel told the Senate Intelligence Committee.
