After two days of chaotic public meetings, threats to fire Phoenix’s top official and an implosion of the city’s annual budget, the Phoenix City Council awarded a hazy victory to a group opposed to a planned south Phoenix light-rail project.
The council voted to redesign the planned 6-mile light-rail extension to try to maintain four vehicle lanes on Central Avenue (the current plan calls for narrowing the street to two lanes) — something a group of residents in the area has asked the council to do for about six months.
However, the redesign comes with limitations that may curb the possibility of a four-lane configuration.
