The Loop 101 in Scottsdale is crowded, but it may be more so with plans of Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company to place a new regional headquarters and other development near there, with 5,500 people working on 136 acres. The project also could open much more land to development.
The parcel is part of the state trust and is in a floodplain, according to The Arizona Republic. Major improvements are needed, and the Scottsdale City Council in a four-hour meeting agreed to a rezoning and also reimbursing Nationwide up to $21.9 million of the $33 million the company would spend on infrastructure for drainage and roads.
Of the 5,500 jobs, 1,240 already exist in Scottsdale, at Gainey Ranch and Pima Center.
Meanwhile, some residents were upset about the change, especially some from the Grayhawk community to the north.
