Arizona’s largest highway project — a $916 million effort to add 22 miles of freeway in metro Phoenix — is more than halfway done, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.
The South Mountain Freeway entered its most active construction phase this spring as crews install bridge girders in the southwest Valley, blast rocks near Ahwatukee Foothills and relocate underground utilities and widen roads in southeast Valley neighborhoods.
The new freeway, an extension of Loop 202, will connect travelers from west Phoenix to the southeast Valley.
