Diamondbacks’ Brad Boxberger blows save in late-inning collapse as Cubs salvage series split

Rizzo homer sinks Diamondbacks in the 9th./video

For the second straight day, a late-inning collapse did in the Diamondbacks.

Diamondbacks closer Brad Boxberger entered the ninth inning here Thursday with his club holding a two-run lead. But two swings changed that, as Arizona lost 7-6 in the series finale.

A game-tying, two-run homer from second baseman David Bote followed by a walk-off blast by first baseman Anthony Rizzo sealed the Diamondbacks’ fate before 38,979 at Wrigley Field.

With the loss, the Diamondbacks managed only a split with the Cubs after winning the first two games of the series. And, as in Wednesday’s 2-1 loss, Arizona was unable to maintain a lead in the late innings.

BOX SCORE:  Cubs 7, Diamondbacks 6
