A planned light-rail expansion in south Phoenix has captured the attention of the entire Valley as officials attempt to reconcile with residents fearful of how the project may change their community.
Although officials have planned to bring light rail to south Phoenix for more than a decade, residents and business owners say they were left out of the planning process and were not told that the addition of light rail would result in Central Avenue between Watkins Street and Baseline Road losing traffic lanes.
Earlier this year, a grassroots group dubbed “4 lanes or no train” took its concerns to the council and the media.
