Raising the bar: Job prospects look good for Arizona’s next generation of attorneys

‘Competition for good lawyers has intensified’

As the next wave of Arizona attorneys flocked to the Phoenix Convention Center this week to take the Arizona Bar Exam, the prospects of landing a job for newly minted lawyers is looking good.

About 600 recent law school graduates were expected to take the exam Tuesday and Wednesday. For some, this will not be their first attempt at the test.

The two-day exam, which is required for anyone who wants to practice law in Arizona, consists of both essay and multiple choice questions. It is administered by the Arizona Supreme Court.

“There’s nothing fun about it,” said Heather Murphy, spokeswoman for the Arizona Supreme Court. “This is the culmination of a lot of hard work and years of studying.”

But the stress of the exam won’t melt away from test-takers as soon as they finish at the end of the day on July 25, Murphy said.
