The Diamondbacks did not enter their weekend series here expecting to have to scramble to avoid a sweep on getaway day, but that was the position in which they found themselves on Sunday afternoon. As such, their 9-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds was a case of making the best of a bad situation.

“It was a game that we really wanted to win,” Diamondbacks infielder Daniel Descalso said. “I don’t know if it was a must-win, but it kind of felt like we needed to play with a little sense of urgency today, and we did.”

As it stands, the weekend didn’t play out as disastrously as it could have for the Diamondbacks: They actually gained a game in the National League West and are now alone in first place, a game up on the Los Angeles Dodgers, who were swept in three games by the Colorado Rockies.
