State Superintendent of Public Instruction Diane Douglas is in danger of finishing her last four months in office as a lame duck.
And the Nov. 6 race for her replacement is likely to involve candidates who were considered underdogs in Tuesday’s primary races.
Both the Republican and Democratic races were still too close to call Tuesday night.
Early voting results showed two Republican candidates — Bob Branch and Frank Riggs — ahead of Douglas in what was the most crowded ballot this election.
Those results also showed Kathy Hoffman ahead of David Schapira for the Democratic nomination for state schools superintendent.
Branch, a college professor who once ran for Congress, appeared to model his campaign after President Donald Trump’s and has frequently expressed his admiration for the president. Branch had a slight advantage over Riggs in early results.
