Mesa Vice Mayor David Luna is leading challenger Verl Farnsworth in early returns in Tuesday’s primary election.
Early results showed incumbents Luna and Francisco Heredia leading the race in their districts. Heredia, on a crowded ballot, may still have to face a runoff election in November against challenger Mark Yarbrough, who was in second place.
“It was a tough race because of all the mudslinging, and I didn’t expect that from my opponent,” Luna said after early results rolled in. “It made me a little sharper.”
