Glendale selected a new nonprofit to provide after-school and summer programs for at-risk children at Glendale Community Center.
So far, it isn’t going well.
The center re-opened more than two months late and, when it did, no children showed up the first day.
A review by The Arizona Republic found that the nonprofit, Roots Recreation and Learning Center, appeared to mislead the city about its finances and how equipped it was to operate the program.
At the helm of that nonprofit is Emmanuel Allen, a candidate for Glendale City Council in the Aug. 28 election.
Allen is challenging Jamie Aldama for the Ocotillo District seat, and Allen has the backing of the mayor.
