Appointments to the Phoenix City Council have become increasingly common in recent years as elected council members resign to run for higher offices.
When a council member resigns, the remaining members select a replacement to serve until the city can hold an election.
The last time the council appointed an interim member — just two weeks ago — chaos erupted. Now, some council members are considering a change to the appointment process as the council prepares for another appointment next week.
The council shake-up is a result of former Mayor Greg Stanton’s departure to run for Congress — which led former council members Daniel Valenzuela and Kate Gallego to resign to compete for the city’s top spot.
