Apartments in downtown Tempe with a mid-century garden style and cheaper rents will be razed and replaced by a seven-story luxury apartment complex aimed at students.
Rents at the current complex, Tempe Crossroads, on Orange Street ranged from $800 to $1,100. The luxury student apartments will run $1,000 to $2,400, according to Tempe City Councilwoman Lauren Kuby.
She was the only “no” vote against the project, raising concerns about the city’s lack of affordable housing.
The average monthly rent in Tempe is about $1,250, the second highest in metro Phoenix behind Scottsdale, according to Rent Cafe.
