Several years in the making, the renovations of Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe are nearly completed as the Arizona State University football team gets set to open training camp Aug. 3.
Originally pegged at a cost of $225 million, the project widened with the proposed addition in 2014 of the student-athlete football facility that boosted the cost to $256 million. By the time ASU’s Board of Regents voted on the project’s final phase in 2016, the cost had jumped to $268 million.
The final price of the structure’s metamorphosis eventually ballooned to $307 million, a financial figure almost as lofty as the Tempe Butte into which the foundation of the stadium is carved. The project’s architect was Phoenix-based Gould Evans, while the general contractor was Hunt/Sundt, a joint venture of Indianapolis, Indiana-based Hunt Construction Groupand Tucson-based Sundt Construction.
