Councilmember Eva Putzova wants to send a letter from the Flagstaff City Council to Arizona Public Service to ask the utility company to stop influencing electoral politics.

However, her proposal didn’t get enough votes at the Sept. 18 council meeting to get the members to discuss the issue before the November election. The item will not appear in front of the council until after any efforts by APS to influence the election could even take place.

Councilmember Celia Barotz was the only other member to vote in favor of the discussion, leaving it still short two supporting votes that would have brought it up at the next meeting. Mayor Coral Evans recused herself from overseeing the item, but did not state why.

Putzova acknowledged the timing, saying they would draft the letter to reflect the fact that the notice will be coming out after the election.

She strongly opposed APS’s actions in Flagstaff and called it a “monopoly” in the Flagstaff area.
