If Patrick Corbin were at all sentimental about his start on Saturday night – an outing that might go down as his last in a Diamondbacks uniform at Chase Field – he wasn’t willing to talk about it after a 5-1 loss to the Colorado Rockies.
“I think at the end of the season I’ll look back at everything that’s happened here in my career here,” Corbin said after giving up four runs in just three innings. “I’m just focused on one more start and we’ll see what happens after that.”
Of the 77 starts Corbin has made at Chase Field in his career, Saturday night’s was the second-shortest. He worked out of a jam in the first, had a relatively easy second, then gave up four runs in a 44-pitch third inning. He didn’t return to the mound for the fourth.
Corbin issued four walks and hit a batter, struggling to exhibit the same impressive command and control he’d had for most of his starts this season. He also ran into a patient Rockies team that forced him to land pitches, especially his slider, in the zone, and he couldn’t.
“There are no secrets with Corbin,” Rockies manager Bud Black said. “He’s an All-Star pitcher, with arguably one of the best sliders in the game. And we did a good job laying off the low slider. This guy has 200-plus punchouts in under 200 innings and it’s a direct reflection of his slider. And we laid off the slider pretty well.”
BOX SCORE: Rockies 5, Diamondbacks 1
