A small shard of wood broke off Jon Jay’s bat in the eighth inning on Friday night, and in the moment Jay did not seem to know just what had happened. He stood briefly in the box after his swing, as he would after a foul ball. Then he realized it might be a good idea to run.
From Dave McKay’s vantage point in the first base coach’s box, the ball Jay hit appeared to be headed for foul territory. And, he figured, it wasn’t going to be all that close. But, McKay recalled later, the ball suddenly began to veer left, slicing toward fair territory.
“I’ve never seen that before,” McKay said.
It landed fair – easily – and rolled into the grass in deep right field before coming to a stop, and Jay raced into third with a tie-breaking triple, a huge and weird and wholly welcomed hit for the Diamondbacks in their 4-2 victory over the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park.
BOX SCORE: Diamondbacks 4, Astros 2
