One of the first people to congratulate Georges Reuter on his election to the Eloy City Council was a good friend, which likely happens to candidates at all levels.
But what is more uncommon is having a good friend also be the prime minister of Luxembourg, a tiny European country nestled among Germany, France and Belgium. But Reuter was nonchalant about it: “He’s my good friend. We talk regularly.”
Indeed, Reuter is an international man. Born in Luxembourg, he spent years working for the German government as a police officer in the German equivalent of the Secret Service.
“I’ve protected everyone but the queen and the pope,” he quipped.
Photos of his time as an officer adorn the walls of his office in downtown Eloy, showing him with leaders from all around the world. But he declined to provide specifics on anything that might have happened during those times, saying keeping mum was a professional courtesy toward his unit.
