Democrat Ralph Atchue did not refrain from taking some jabs at his political opponents Friday night during a debate that covered taxes, education and water.
The state Senate candidate from Eloy lambasted the Republican-controlled Legislature for allowing conflicts of interest to go unchecked in charter schools. A GOP lawmaker from Mesa reportedly profited millions of dollars recently by transferring a for-profit charter school chain to nonprofit status, according to The Arizona Republic.
That lawmaker recently wrote in a column that the Republic’s article was “an attack on school choice, the free market and my personal integrity.”
But Atchue, and other Democrats running in Legislative District 11, made clear their desires to invest more in public education.
