Republican U.S. Rep. David Schweikert and his Democratic challenger, Anita Malik, are running in the same district but described very different living conditions Friday for its residents.
Schweikert, who is seeking a fifth term in the House of Representatives, said Arizonans are seeing the fruits of tax-cut legislation he helped shape, with rising home values and rising wages — especially for moderate-to-low-skill workers.
Repeatedly he insisted that good things are happening across the country despite the “noise” that often surrounds President Donald Trump’s administration.
Malik, a self-employed businesswoman and political newcomer, countered that the Scottsdale-based 6th Congressional District isn’t all affluent, with significant numbers of children living in poverty and many people struggling to find and keep health-insurance coverage.
