12 Gilbert families evicted as landlord plans renovations, rent hike

A California company is kicking dozens of parents and children out of affordable Gilbert apartments so the company can renovate the units and likely double the rent.

The company appears to be ousting at least one family with a long-term lease, which could be in violation of state landlord-tenant law.

Phoenix property manager Valley Income Properties notified the 12 families on Sept. 11 that they needed to vacate by the end of October, according to a letter provided by a tenant.

“It turns your world upside down. It puts a knot in the pit of your stomach,” said renter Freddy Rosales, who lives at the complex with his wife and teenage daughter. “Now what do you do?”
