The PayPal Suns deal goes further than just advertising on the jersey

There are just over two weeks before the NBA season tips off and as anticipation grows to see a new coach and new players on the Phoenix Suns, fans also will see something else new on the team’s uniforms: an advertisement.

The Suns have partnered with digital payment company PayPal Holdings Inc. (Nasdaq: PYPL) to put a patch with its logo on the Suns’ jerseys this season.

In the 2017-18 season, the NBA launched a three-year jersey pilot program that allowed teams to sell a 2.5-inch-by-2.5-inch space on its jerseys. The Suns did not have a sponsor last season. After Phoenix’s announcement, all but five teams – the Chicago Bulls, Houston Rockets, Indiana Pacers, Oklahoma City Thunder and Washington Wizards – have jersey patch partners.
