Following Surprise Mayor Sharon Wolcott’s announced departure from city government, city council members commented on her legacy and departure.
Ms. Wolcott confirmed weeks of rumors and speculation with announcement of her official resignation, which the mayor read from a prepared statement in the closing minutes of the regularly scheduled City Council public meeting Nov. 6 at City Hall, 16000 N. Civic Center Plaza.
“Tomorrow morning, I will be submitting a letter to the City Clerk, notifying her of my intention to step off the stage as mayor of Surprise,” Ms. Wolcott stated. “After a great deal of thought, my decision comes at what I believe is both the right time for me personally and for the city.”
A two-term mayor who served since 2012, Ms. Wolcott defeated former Surprise Mayor Lyn Truitt in the 2011 general election before being reelected – running unopposed – in 2016. She first joined the City Council after being elected to represent District 1 in 2010.
