Peoria project hit by materials cost increases due to tariffs

A new potable water booster station to serve growth in northern Peoria is on track to begin construction next month, but not without becoming a victim of new tariffs and high labor costs.

The Fiscal Year 2019 capital improvement program includes construction for the Agua Fria Booster Station budgeted at about $4.4 million. However Engineering Supervisor Daniel Kiel said costs have increased about $914,000, causing a shortfall, with funds transferred from savings from a completed project.

The new pump station will provide an additional 6 million gallons of drinking water per day to the Vistancia area for future growth.

He said significant cost escalations in the water industry and a revision to the project’s original scope caused the increase.
